Karen Villagers Propose Sustainable Hydropower

"God be with all of you in your lives. In August of 2006, the SPDC burned our farms and destroyed our village we were forced to flee our homes and traditional lands. We became internally displaced people and during the course of our struggle, we met with other displaced people from seven other villages. We believed that even in the face of extreme hardship resulting from the civil war and political unrest, it was important for our children to have an education. So, in 2008 we founded a small school for our children to attend and despite the daily problems and struggles we deal with as displaced peoples, the school has been running well so far.

Due to the constant fear of fighting/violence and of the SPDC finding and attacking us, we are forced to live in the forest. It is a constant struggle – finding enough to food to eat is our main concern. Our next major concern is the school – at the moment the school has no electricity (e.g. lights for the students).

We are submitting this proposal to you to discuss the potential for a small hydro power project to help us provide electricity for the school.

God bless you all.

The village currently has no electricity due to its remote location, nor do the villagers have enough money to buy candles or fuel to light their homes. They have had to turn to their local forest’s wood, which has negative environmental impacts. The project involves installing a clean 500W hydropower system that will provide the community with reliable electricity year round. This will allow students to read and study in the evening, charge torch light and camera batteries and light their weekly church ceremonies, all while keeping the forests intact.
