Mon people are an ethnic nationality in Burma situated near the Thailand border. Due to internal conflict in Burma, many Mon people have fled and taken refugees to Thai Burma border, during the past two decades. The people of Mon State suffer from economic crisis, poverty, political oppression and land confiscation.

The Mon people in particular, have suffered from different abuses. OMWO works for peace, substantial development and to maintain Mon culture. Also, OMWO was founded with the notion of providing for the supporting Mon women in these crisis situations.

OMWO aims to encourage women’s participation in the struggle for peace, preserve our own language, culture and tradition, promote equality and democracy in Burma, co-operate with and seek co-operation of other ethnic nationalities and international organizations in the furtherance of mutual aims and the well-being of people in Burma.

Mission 
To improve the life of Mon women and their families, and to protect violence against women, rape and sexual assaults, education of rural areas, to empower Mon women to become a part of the regional and international network and to strengthen of women in participation in decision at all levels.

Aims 
To encourage the women’s participation in the struggle for peace, to preserve own language, culture and tradition, equality and toward democracy and a federal system in Burma. To co-operate with and seek co-operation of other ethnic nationalities and international organizations in the furtherance of mutual aims and the well being of people in Burma.

 

Objectives 

To improve the women capacity building. 
To get the Gender equality. 
To protect the Women Rights and Rights of children. 
To provide support of women in crisis and in various sorts. 
To unite women for the recognition and attainment of their rights.

In achieving its aims, OMWO undertakes a number of programs including:

- Peace building and gender awareness 
- Women leadership training
